In September of 2019, members of the Journal’s Editorial Board came together as a working committee to focus on next steps for the Grassroots Fundraising Journal, a beloved publication with a history of over 35 years.
The last issue of the Grassroots Fundraising Journal was published July-August 2018. While there were no current plans to produce new articles, we knew that thousands of people continued to find the fundraising information, case studies, and how-to instructions valuable.
Given that, we are thrilled to share that the full archive of the Journal is now available free to the public. By freeing up access to the archive, we can continue to spread fundraising knowledge and lift up the work of sustaining grassroots organizations.
Nonprofit Quarterly and the Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training (GIFT) are very pleased to announce that more than 200 articles from the Grassroots Fundraising Journal are now available for free. A big thanks to all the authors who have allowed their articles to be copyrighted into the Creative Commons so that anyone can use any article without paying a fee or seeking permission.
This collection of articles provides, in one easily sortable database, practical information on all kinds of fundraising strategies, from special events to bequests and from e-appeals to face to face asking. In addition, articles discuss how to set a goal, pick a strategy, create a plan, go back to donors year after year, and build a board of directors.
The Grassroots Fundraising Journal was published from January 1982—August 2018. During those decades, it earned a reputation for helping activists understand the relationship between fundraising and organizing, and helped thousands of organizations build power to demand change by building a base of individual donors who were also constituents. The case studies proved that no organization needed to take foundation grants for work that was not part of the core mission, and that even small organizations could raise big money.
GIFT is grateful to the Nonprofit Quarterly for providing a home for this archive and assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of it. NPQ was often a partner with the Grassroots Fundraising Journal in marketing, writing and research over the years, and it is entirely appropriate that this collection ended up here.
